Teaching

I coordinated and lectured courses as part of the MSc in Biology at Leiden University, and participated as a teacher in other BSc and MSc level courses both at Leiden University and Universitat de Barcelona:

• Mechanisms of Disease, MSc in Biology, Leiden University (2024–2025). Course coordinator; conventional lectures and invited-speaker seminars. 85 students, 6 ECTS. Course rating 8.4; teacher evaluation 9.3.
• Mechanisms of Disease, MSc in Biology, Leiden University (2023–2024). Participant teacher throughout the course. 90 students, 6 ECTS. Course rating 7.5; teacher evaluation 8.1.
• Model organisms in cancer drug discovery and development, MSc in Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences, Leiden University (2025–2026, 2024–2025 and 2023–2024). Participant teacher, one specialist lecture. 40 students, 4 ECTS. Teacher evaluation 8.3 (2024–2025).
• Cell Biology and Cancer, BSc in Biology, Leiden University (2022–2023). Practical laboratory supervisor; lectures and practicals. 100 students, 3 ECTS.
• Mecanismos de Patogenicidad Microbiana, MSc in Microbiología Avanzada, Universitat de Barcelona (2016–2017). Participant teacher, one specialist lecture.

Mentoring

I regularly supervise visiting scientists, bachelor, master, and PhD students:

At the doctoral level, I am the co-promotor of Yun Zhang's PhD thesis, together with Prof. Alexander Kros (Leiden Institute of Chemistry, Leiden University). Yun is developing liposomal formulations for the targeted delivery of drugs across the blood-brain barrier and to specific macrophage populations, which we test in the zebrafish model system that I developed within the collaborative NWO-XL project; she is expected to defend her thesis in 2026.

I have also mentored more than 14 MSc and BSc students, all with outstanding evaluations which allowed them to take on PhD positions at prestigious institutions, including several cum laude, and national research prizes for the internship carried out under my supervision.
